What are encaustic style tiles?

Encaustic tiles are ceramic tiles with a pattern or figure on the surface that is made up of multiple colours of the clay itself rather than a glaze.

Encaustic is an ancient Greek word meaning “to heat or burn in.” Encaustic materials are created through a heating process that seals in the dye and clay. Clay and powdered colours are heated during the firing process to seal in the design and create a hard surface.

They usually feature two colours, however a tile can have up to six colours.

Grout for encaustic style tiles

Keep in mind the colour grout you wish to use when choosing your encaustic floor tiles. Grout has the potential to completely transform the appearance of your area. To compliment the tiles and allow the design to come through, we recommend using a neutral grout with encaustic floor tiles.
